Nicholas JahnI've planned on getting an MBA since I completed my undergrad, especially since my career goal was to own a business. I needed an online program because I didn't want to wait to start my MBA until my commitment with the Air Force was up, which was still another three and a half years away when I began the program. Having my MBA would allow me to make a better career decision, even if ultimately I choose to remain in the military.

I decided on the Kelley Direct (KD) program based on the fact that it was from a well-known program, and I had a lot of connections with IU. For me, it was more personal than just picking any of the other distance programs. I also wanted to get the best degree I could based on rank and reputation. That's ultimately why I chose KD. Not to mention that when I researched other schools, they didn't respond to my inquiries. KD, especially the front office, always answered my questions swiftly, usually within hours. They were extremely helpful and friendly, and it was a good fit.

I expected graduate work to be incredibly involved, detailed and over my head. It turned out that wasn't the case at all. The professors played a big part in that. Knowing they taught the same classes on the "brick and mortar" Kelley side really helped me to take the program more seriously and get more out of it.

I also anticipated the relationship with the professors to be very rigid and stoic, but it was surprisingly less serious and more interactive. The professors handled the classes well and were extremely accommodating, especially when I needed a little leeway due to military obligations. There were times when I was traveling in places that didn't offer good internet access. The professors knew my situation and were understanding of the circumstances. Besides boasting a first-rate faculty, Kelley Direct offers many advantages over a conventional graduate program. From an opportunity cost standpoint, the difference is huge. From a learning standpoint, I like the discussion forums and the chance to process information before responding to classmates. I can look at the questions first and post my responses later, after I've determined what I want to say. It's more productive for me than a shotgun approach in a typical classroom setting. Another advantage is that I can work when I'm on the road. That type of flexibility was critical for me. Additionally, I've really enjoyed working with colleagues from different areas of the world and different industries. It's been very beneficial to hear about their experiences. A traditional program may not have the cross section of people or offer such varying perspectives.

I would recommend Kelley Direct to friends and co-workers and have already. As I mentioned before, I had a much more personal connection with the school, which was important to me along with Kelley Direct's rank. I'd be glad to share my experience.

The best piece of advice I can offer to new students is that you will get out of the program what you put into it. Prioritize your time, but at the same time don't drive yourself crazy. There will be times when you can read everything and times when you can't. It will be a tough two years, but balance it with family and fun things. There are many different ways to complete the program. Figure out what works for you and make the most of it.
