International Students
The IUPUI Office of International Affairs (OIA) defines an international student as a citizen of another country, who is studying at Indiana University, without permanent resident, refugee, or political asylum status. As such, international students must satisfy the application requirements as established by the IUPUI Office of International Affairs. Generally, this means demonstrating English proficiency, providing original transcripts, marksheet and diploma for evaluation (original documents will be returned if a student supplies a return self-addressed, stamped envelope).
Students whose native language is not English, who do not have a bachelor's degree from the US , but are permanent residents must also satisfy the application requirements established by the IUPUI Office of International Affairs. In addition to the items noted above, these students must also provide a photocopy (both sides) of a permanent resident alien registration card.
ACADEMIC RECORDS
You must submit official transcripts and diplomas of all previous academic course work completed after graduation from high school both work already completed and work currently in progress. If you are currently enrolled, submit a transcript (official academic record) of the courses you have completed to date with your application. Then, as soon as possible after you complete the courses/degree in progress, submit your final transcript and degree certificate. The records should show a complete list of courses taken, grades received and any diplomas or certificates earned. They should also indicate the number of credits awarded for each course or the number of hours of classroom, lecture, and laboratory and include information about the school's grading scale.
Note: All items submitted in support of your application become the property of IUPUI. Documents are converted to electronic file format and retained in paper form for only one year from the date the document is received and scanned. After that date, all documents will be destroyed.
IUPUI Requirements for Official Documents and Certification
Transcripts and other educational records are considered official if the issuing institution sends them directly to IUPUI. Course work from one institution reported as transfer credit on another school's transcript does not constitute an official transcript. Where colleges and universities routinely issue transcripts in English, those documents can be accepted as official; otherwise, official documents in the original language must be submitted.
When the policy of the issuing institution prohibits sending original transcripts directly to IUPUI, you can send an officially certified copy directly to us with your application. Such certified documents should be issued on official stationery with an original ink stamp or raised seal of the issuing school, and have an original signature of the principal, registrar, or other officer with authority to issue official educational records. In cases where the local, state, or national government keeps educational records, the original signature of an appropriate officer and/or the raised seal or ink stamp of the appropriate agency will constitute official certification.
Certification by a public notary is not acceptable. IUPUI may contact the issuing school or government agency for verification whenever the authenticity of educational documents is questioned.
If you are unable to provide an official copy of a transcript or academic record, please explain in writing the reasons why such documents cannot be obtained.
If you are still unsure about what documents to submit, please contact the Office of International Affairs.
CERTIFIED ENGLISH TRANSLATIONS
If your official academic records are not in English, you will need to submit an English translation along with your official documents in the original language. Translations must follow the same format as the official document(s). The accuracy of the translation should be certified either by an appropriate officer at your school by an appropriate government officer at the Ministry of Education, or by a U.S. Educational Advising Center. If you need assistance, the Advising Center in your country can advise you on preparing your academic records for submission.
English translations by themselves are not sufficient for us to make an admission decision. You must also submit the corresponding official academic records in the original language.
If you do not have a translation that has been officially certified in your home country, you may translate your documents yourself and obtain local certification. Contact the Office of International Affairs for a recommendation of acceptable certification for your native language.
ENGLISH PROFICIENCY
If English is not your native language, you must demonstrate proficiency in English prior to admission. See the list of countries that IUPUI recognizes as being predominantly native English speaking. To meet IUPUI's minimum standard for acceptance to any graduate or professional program, you may submit any one of the following as satisfactory proof of English proficiency. However, many graduate programs accept only the TOEFL and require a score significantly higher than the minimum campus standard.
